HISTORY

On June 11, 1994, Robert E. Petersen and his wife, Margie, fulfilled a longtime dream when they became founding benefactors to start the Petersen Automotive Museum, donating $5 million to the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum. In April, 2000, the Petersens contributed an additional $24.8 million dollars to the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum to retire the bond debt
and establish the Petersen Automotive Museum as an independent nonprofit organization. Overall, their gifts to the Petersen Automotive Museum total over $30 million, one of the largest gifts to any museum in the United States.
The Petersen Automotive Museum, recognized internationally for its innovative design, is dedicated to the interpretive study of the automobile and its influence on our culture and lives. Encompassing more than 300,000 square feet, its exhibits and lifelike dioramas feature more than 150 rare and classic cars, trucks and motorcycles.
Covering four floors, the facility features permanent exhibits on the first floor that trace the history of the automobile. Visitors are invited to walk through, not by, exhibits and dioramas and experience settings of early Los Angeles where the world's first shopping district was designed.
The second floor is composed of five large changing exhibition galleries with state-of-the-art displays of race cars, classic cars, vintage motorcycles, concept cars, celebrity and movie cars, and automotive design and technology.
The May Family Children's Discovery Center is located on the third floor. Designed to spark interest in science by way of the automobile, the 6,500 square-foot, interactive "hands-on" learning center teaches children basic scientific principles by explaining the fundamental functions of a car.
A spectacular all-glass penthouse conference center, Founder's Lounge and kitchen, comprise the fourth floor, which is available for special events and functions.
Brief History of the Petersen Automotive Museum
The automobile and Los Angeles, inseparable for a century, have been linked together in a historical experience that has led to the creation of one of the world's largest and most innovative automotive museums, Petersen Automotive Museum.
The Museum is located at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue where 75 years ago the world's first linear shopping district dedicated to the emerging auto age was developed -- the Miracle Mile -- with its wide store windows set close to the sidewalk and street, and large rear entrances to accommodate the traffic.
Experience a 20th Century "road map" depicting the evolution of a culture that has influenced life throughout Southern California and especially Los Angeles; the only major city that was entirely shaped by the automobile. Three floors of automotive history take the visitor through time and traces the automobile's influence on the culture of Los Angeles.
The first floor follows the history of the automobile with lifelike dioramas and settings, allowing visitors to experience the automobile as it relates to everyday life.
The second floor is devoted to five, rotating exhibition galleries with state-of-the-art presentations of race cars, classic cars, hot rods, motorcycles, movie and celebrity cars, and more automotive technology and design.
The May Family Children's Discovery Center is located on the third floor. Designed to spark children's interest in science by way of the automobile, the 6,500 square-foot, "hands-on" learning center teaches basic scientific principles using the fundamental elements of a car.
A dazzling all-glass penthouse conference center and Founder's Lounge constitute the fourth floor which is available for corporate or private functions.

The First Floor
The Petersen Automotive Museum, unlike any other automotive museum, presents historical displays that chronicle the evolution of the automobile. A winding journey on the "Streetscape" takes visitors through more than 30 exhibits that bring back the sights and sounds of the automobile's vital role in shaping the history and cultural landscape of modern-day Los Angeles.
The "Streetscape" tour begins in a downtown 1901 blacksmith shop where one of the first automobiles in Los Angeles was built. Then into the rolling hills of Malibu to find a 1911 American Underslung stuck in the mud with a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean in the background. Stroll past a California Highway Patrolman hidden behind an authentic Los Angeles Times billboard and into an alley displaying a 1932 Twin Coach Helms Bakery truck. Walk around a 1920s service station. See a 1939 new car showroom. Walk through the cars parked outside a recreation of the world's first strip mall. Experience the 1950s standing in front of a coffee shop and take a peek inside a customizer's body shop. Stand in front of a 1960s suburban garage.
Learn about safety at the scene of a highway accident and finish the "Streetscape" tour
with "What's next," an exhibit of possibilities for the automobiles of the future.
Throughout the Streetscape, a chronological exhibit of gas pumps, parkways, freeways, racetracks and automotive technology lets the visitor experience a history spanning over 90 years.
The Second Floor
The second floor galleries of the Petersen Automotive Museum present exciting and interesting exhibits in five main galleries, with exhibits that change throughout the year. With more than 35,000 square feet of exhibit space, automobiles are presented as an intrinsically interesting object of art, design and technology. The constantly revolving exhibits keep a fresh look for repeat visitors.
The galleries include the Grand Salon and State of the Art Gallery, with a wide variety changing exhibits; the Bruce Meyer Gallery, currently home to classic hot rods; and the Otis Chandler Motorcycle Gallery, with an exciting look at motorcycle history. The Hollywood Gallery features a constantly changing array of cars owned by celebrities as well as cars used in movies and television.
The Third Floor
The May Family Discovery Center at the Petersen Automotive Museum is located on the Museum's third floor, and delights children and families with hands-on, interactive exhibits that teach basic scientific principles via the automobile. The Discovery Center is included with Museum admission.
At the entrance of the Discovery Center, the illustrated cartoon characters "Professor Lugnut" and "Elena the Engineer" point out science facts that guests can learn as they explore the Discovery Center. Exhibits include:
In the Vroom Room, children learn about how sound travels and can hop on a police motorcycle, turn on its lights, and discover how a police radar gun works.
Especially designed for the Discovery Center, kids of all ages (especially teens anxious to drive) can take a "spin" in a real-time computerized driving simulator.
Families can bring their toddlers and young children to this area for one-on-one exploration. A bright green Sparkletts® truck delivers science fun with special "Discovery Bottles." Parents and children can check out bottles filled with educational games and puzzles to enhance their time at the Museum.
Visitors can dress up in historical motoring attire -- coats, goggles and scarves -- and step into a 1910 Model T for the perfect picture opportunity!
Dangling overhead the Discovery Center's main hallway are a number of giant rotating gears, demonstrating how gears transmit force.
Visitors can gaze at the Gravitram, a giant maze of tracks filled with billiard balls, and learn about the Newtonian physics principles of force and motion.
Through photos and informative interactive panels, families learn about energy and its many forms. Automotive fuels including gasoline, methane, ethanol, electricity and hydrogen fuel are explained and conservation issues are addressed.
The May Family Discovery Center opened November 22, 1997.
